Q & A starting solid food

Yep, I have another question about motherhood and I do believe there will be more to come. So thank you in advance and I love to hear what works for you!!

First of all Landon will be 6 months July 10th (right around the corner). I have given him rice cereal (like 1 table spoon each night) and he has tried peas & carrots. I want to know how often and how much did you feed your little ones. Since he does still eat 5.5oz every 3 or 4 hours. Do I give him a little after his bottle or wait a half hour then give him baby food?? Hmm.

I'm including a picture of my growing little Lan-man

Thanks,

Tricia

  1. Tricia, I am so glad you posted this. My daughter just turned six months old on Friday and I have been trying for a month to give her food and she won't take it. Did you or anyone else reading this have problems when you first started?? Did you do any tricks?? Everytime it goes in her mouth she gags. The first two days I started she took it but now she wants nothing to do with it. She is not getting enough calories from just the milk because she is now more active and so now she is waking up three times a night to eat. Any advice and I don't mean to take away from your question but I need help. To answer your question my doctor said to try and feed them food at least three times a day morning noon and night and milk in between.

  2. I always started with the food, to make sure they were hungry enough to try it and then finished the feeding with milk.....trying one food for a whole week and then moving on to a new food the next week ( they were concerned with food allergies with Paige). It took some time for her to get the hang of it, but she loved sweet potatoes :)
Just stick with it....and the weight loss was normal for Paige too during this time. She was just so active and not eating enough during the day.

  3. Tricia.....we already talked about his but you have to just keep introducing the foods. It may take a baby like 8-10 times or so before he gets used to a certain food.

  4. Senessa, ok the first time I fed Landon we put rice cereal in his bottle b/c we could not keep his hunger satified. I know you are not supposed to do that, but it worked, and he got used ot the taste of rice cereal. Then 2 weeks later we started using the spoon to feed rice cereal mixed with formula. One week later we fed Landson peas and he did nothing (but make gross faces), then I tried the next week and he started opening his mouth to the spoon, but he did not exactly swallow that much. I did feed him the solid before his bottle, but it did frustrated him b/c he was so hungry and could not eatr it quick enough. I'm not that consisten with feeding and with everyones advive I will start feeding him 3 times a week. No, tricks, but I did try to place the food further back in his mouth. Recently I fed him carrots and he seemed to really not like them, but like Stephanie said, keep offering them. Keep me updated on what your little one is doing!

  5. Hi Tricia, it sounds like you're on the right track. I started Talan on squash as his first veggie, and he made funny faces, but then started to like it. It took a few days though. Just keep trying a little at a time, maybe even just a few bites 4-5 times per day, then follow it with a bottle. Be careful not to intro fruit too soon, I think I started too soon with Talan, now its hard to get him to eat veggies b/c he likes the fruit so much better, not that I can blame him. But of course now at 10 months he hardly eats baby food any more, he only wants food he can pick up by himself. He does still love sweet potatoes though, and I make those myself, I think they taste better than that watery bland baby food too! Good luck, I'm sure Landon will get the hang of it soon :)
